My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that every person can learn and that talent is not an inborn trait that some students have and some students do not. Every person who has the desire to learn something new, has the drive to be willing to put the time and effort in, and has the perseverance to keep trying even when things get tough can learn an instrument. It is much more about hard work, drive, and perseverance than it is about being born with a talent that you either have or not.

I believe in an encouraging and positive learning environment. A safe place for mistakes to be made and gently corrected. I always try to focus first on finding something that students are doing well before remarking on something that needs to be fixed or changed. I want students to feel like it’s okay to make mistakes in their lessons with me and in their practice at home. Learning an instrument is about taking risks and sometimes trying things that don’t work. Learning an instrument is about finding new ways to problem-solve in new and creative ways, which is a skill that I hope students can learn to apply in all areas of their life.

I want to inspire students of all ages to make beautiful music, and to find satisfaction in seeing what they can achieve through their own problem-solving and hard work. I want to inspire my students to be life-long learners and to be able to take music with them wherever they go in life. I also hope my students have the chance to discover the joy that comes from playing music with other musicians in an orchestra ensemble or in a small chamber ensemble. I believe music is more fun when experienced together.
